Walker School Development

October 24, 2018 by admin

A drawing of the proposed development can be seen here:
https://planningandbuildingcontrol.enfield.gov.uk/online-applications/files/865895A2BC2D75BB9968F762B005DBE3/pdf/18_03590_FUL-PROPOSED_ELEVATIONS-2005028.pdf
SGA has sent in the following comments:
We wish the scheme to go ahead successfully replacing the existing outdated school facility however it is important that the replacement is designed with future needs in mind considering that it will be there for possibly 60 years. It is worth considering this building as an important piece of townscape which could enrich the sequenced approach to Southgate Green and set an example to school children of the future .It should be a place of learning that they would enjoy visiting and remembering.
We would have expected the applicant to carefully consider the environmental sustainability of a school and are disappointed to see that a sustainable solution has not been considered. Green roofs, walls, suds drainage, solar panels ,ground source heat pumps etc.
The Council as client appears to be setting a low design  bar and the application submitted is a pallid attempt and provides an unsatisfactory replacement. The site is at the core of Southgate Green within the conservation area .The building needs to contribute to the streetscape and to compliment the views towards The Green and Christchurch.
We are not convinced that the scheme submitted is the only possible approach .
The study group considers that alternative approaches could be considered for example to make the box like mass appear to be a number of smaller vertical units or to allow the box mass to be undisguised without being out of place but fitting in.
Taking each in turn the applicant might look to explore articulation of the facade at first and second floor ,around windows and openings. having different planes would help eg, brick bays brought forward or recessed. Exploration of relief in the facades with windows forming part of a relief composition.
Windows could be projected in bay format perhaps using colour as a flag, they could be suitably detailed (reveals especially) to a standard befitting a conservation area.
The first floor could perhaps be expressed as special ,perhaps a different brick pattern ,banding or colour contrast, there are many examples of contemporary brickwork design which could be referred to expressing a sense of individuality and place.
A simple well proportioned façade with modestly and varying and receding planes in different colours giving an overall pattern pleasing to the eye could be explored.
In short not good enough at present

Trent Park Museum

September 26, 2018 by admin

Over the past few months the Trust has been progressing with the design of the museum with the assistance of professional architects and museum design team and we are now at a stage where we will be shortly moving from work on the concept design to start the detailed design. This will require significant further financial commitment from the Trust and we are therefore looking to raise further funds over the coming months.

It would make a real difference if you are able to support us either by making a donation or by simply raising awareness of Trent Park Museum with your community, friends and family.

Tree Watering

May 31, 2018 by admin

There are now a number of young trees in the area. There is a watering contract for the trees but until they are fully established this might not be sufficient during a dry spell. If there is a young tree in your vicinity, would you kindly throw some water on it during hot dry weather.

With our thanks,

Tree Appeal

February 18, 2018 by admin

The Association has received 14 trees through Christ Church’s application under ‘Trees for Sacred Spaces’- a programme sponsored by the Conservation Foundation and London Tree Officers Association.

We have identified places where they could replace dead or damaged trees or improve the street scene in our area. However, since most of these will be planted by LBE with a 3 year watering contract, we are appealing to members to help with the cost which is £90 per tree.

Thanks to the support of members, we now have funds for planting 11 of the donated trees. This map shows the proposed location of 8 of the trees (the red spots), which should be planted in the next couple of weeks. In addition, 3 yews and 2 hawthorns will go into Minchenden Oak Garden and a tulip tree and a hawthorn will go to the Walker Ground.
We hope you will consider making a donation towards this cause.

All donations, large and small, will be welcome.

Donations can be made by cheque made out to:
“Southgate Green Association”

And sent to: J. Bowden, 17 The Green, London N14 7EH.
